Depending on your level of private health fund cover, you may be eligible to claim the cost of your initial consultation under your General Dental benefits. We recommend checking your entitlements with your health fund prior to your appointment.

Other than the potential consultation benefit, all orthodontic treatment and procedures are generally claimed under the Orthodontic category of your health fund cover.

A child’s first orthodontic assessment is recommended around 7–8 years of age, even if they still have some baby teeth. This early assessment allows us to monitor dental and facial development, assess eruption patterns and identify concerns such as crowding, crossbites, impacted teeth or developing bite discrepancies.

Importantly, an early assessment does not mean treatment is required. In many cases, it simply provides an opportunity to monitor growth and determine the most appropriate timing for treatment. Early referral can also help identify cases where intervention during growth may be beneficial and, in some situations, help avoid more complex treatment later.

We encourage our referring dentists to consider an orthodontic assessment around this age, particularly where there are concerns regarding eruption, crowding, bite development or facial growth.

A referral is not required to book an appointment with our practice. While many of our patients are referred by their dentist, you are welcome to contact us directly to arrange an initial consultation.

During your consultation, our orthodontists will assess your individual needs, discuss any concerns you may have, and provide recommendations for treatment where appropriate. We welcome patients of all ages, whether they have been referred by a dental professional or are seeking orthodontic advice independently.

If you are unsure whether orthodontic treatment may be beneficial, we encourage you to book a consultation so we can discuss your options and answer any questions you may have.

Orthodontic treatment provided by a specialist orthodontist is generally not covered by Medicare. As orthodontists are dental specialists, consultations and treatment are typically funded privately or through eligible private health insurance benefits.

Depending on your level of cover, your private health fund may provide benefits for orthodontic treatment under its orthodontic extras category. Benefit limits, waiting periods, and lifetime orthodontic caps can vary between funds, so we recommend contacting your health insurer directly to confirm your entitlements.

Our team is happy to provide treatment estimates and supporting information to assist you in understanding your available health fund benefits and treatment costs before commencing care.

Both dentists and orthodontists play an important role in maintaining your oral health, but they focus on different areas of care. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed additional university training specifically in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of tooth and jaw alignment issues.

A general dentist is responsible for overall dental health, including routine check-ups, cleans, fillings, crowns, and the prevention and treatment of dental disease. An orthodontist, on the other hand, specialises in straightening teeth, correcting bite problems, guiding jaw development, and creating healthy, functional, and attractive smiles.

All orthodontists begin their careers as dentists before undertaking several additional years of full-time postgraduate orthodontic training to become registered specialists.

Many patients are referred to an orthodontist by their dentist; however a referral is not required. You are welcome to contact our practice directly to arrange a consultation and discuss your orthodontic concerns.

In simple terms:

  • Dentist: Focuses on the health of your teeth and gums.
  • Orthodontist: Focuses on the alignment of your teeth, jaws, and bite.

For the best oral health outcomes, orthodontists and dentists often work together throughout your treatment journey to ensure your teeth remain both healthy and well-aligned.
